My good friends over at Vic Firth have just posted a new video of my group Sandbox Percussion performing Jason Treuting’s extremes. Check it out:
extremes is a wildly fascinating piece. It originated as part of So Percussion’s evening-length piece Imaginary City, and it features several hallmarks of Jason’s compositional style – somewhat indeterminate instrumentation, and the use of letters and words as the notational system to generate music.
In this piece, consonants are played on one instrument and with one rhythm and vowels on another. Different groups of players play words – sometimes in unison and sometimes in canon – resulting in an intensely dense cloud of sound. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoy playing it!
